Sleep or Death? What Really Happens to Us When We Sleep
The science of sleep stages, deep sleep, REM, the brain's night cleaning and 24 hours without sleep, and why the Quran calls sleep a 'minor death' (39:42).
The verse
We spend about a third of our lives asleep, yet most of us never ask what happens during those hours. The Quran calls sleep a taking of the soul (39:42), often described as a 'minor death'. Modern sleep science, meanwhile, has discovered that the sleeping body is busy with work it cannot do while awake. Here is what really happens to us at night.
1. Sleep comes in cycles
Every night we go through four to six cycles of about ninety minutes each. Each cycle is made of the light stages N1 and N2, deep sleep (N3) and REM sleep. Deep sleep comes mostly early in the night, and the REM periods grow longer towards dawn.
2. Deep sleep (N3)
In deep sleep the brain shifts into slow, high 'delta waves' of about 0.5 to 4 hertz. This is the stage when it is hardest to wake someone up, and when the body does much of its physical repair.
3. Heart, breath and temperature
In non-REM sleep the heart and breathing slow down. Core body temperature reaches its lowest point in the hours before dawn, the time of tahajjud and suhoor.
4. REM sleep and the paralysed body
In REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, most of the body's muscles are temporarily paralysed. Only the eye muscles and the breathing muscles keep working. This is the stage in which most vivid dreams happen, and it answers the question from our video: closed eyes move during sleep because of REM.
5. The brain's night cleaning
In a 2013 study on mice published in Science, the brain cleared waste products such as beta-amyloid much faster during sleep than when awake, through what researchers call the glymphatic system. Sleep is not only rest; it is maintenance.
6. Twenty-four hours without sleep
A study in Nature found that after about 24 hours without sleep, performance drops to a level comparable to being legally drunk. Sleep is not a luxury; the body was designed to need it.
So, sleep or death?
The Quran describes sleep as a taking of the soul, a spiritual reality that no instrument can measure. Science can watch the body switch into a very different state each night: muscles paralysed, awareness gone, the brain cleaning itself. It cannot see the soul, and how consciousness switches off and returns is still an open question. So we do not call this 'scientific proof'. We call it reflection: every night we experience something close to death, and every morning Allah returns us to life. That is why the Prophet ﷺ taught us to begin the day with: 'All praise is for Allah who gave us life after He caused us to die, and to Him is the return' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6312).
